<u>Enjoy Winter Weather and BE SAFE!!!</u></h2>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Until now, I was thinking that we might be able to go a winter without a reminder of these facts. Temperatures in the 60's and 70's have given way to frigid temperatures and snow ... at least for a few days. Old man winter just had to make his appearance. With these conditions being unavoidable, there are a few steps that we can take to assure that everyone stays safe. </span><br />
<br />
<br />
<div align="center">
<i><b><u><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Shoveling</span></u></b></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><u><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><b><br /></b></span></u></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">Ok, this may not be the biggest risk of the cold weather, but given out profession, and our patients, it is the most applicable, so we are leading off with it. Shoveling can be a good workout if done by the correct person in the correct way. Individuals over the age of 50 should take caution in shoveling. Muscles that haven't been used in some time are being used and this particular form of exercise raises the heartrate as much, if not more than aerobic exercise. Listen to your body, and monitor your heartrate. Most people today have FitBits or some form. Those people that don't, can simply count the amount of beats per minute with a watch. Keep it below 130 just to be safe. If you need to rest, rest. Remember not to use sweat as an indication of exercise/work intensity.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">Just like the previous article on raking, shoveling ... the bending and twisting motion ... is the absolute best way to injure your lumbar spine. In addition to the motion, snow is heavy. When you load this bending and twisting motion with weight, the risk increase exponentially. Scoop and throw smaller amounts of snow, especially if it is wet. If throwing snow, do so in front of you instead of behind you. If you need to throw elsewhere, move your feet to accomplish that task. Remember, prevention is easier than repair.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><u><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><b><br /></b></span></u></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><u><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><b><br /></b></span></u></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><u><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><b>Freezing</b></span></u></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"> </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Cold weather has effects on us, and on our home. First, let's talk about us ... Freezing temperatures effect the extremities first. This is more important and frequently seen in children and the elderly. Children don't have the blood volume and are overall, smaller in stature. This means that waiting at the bus stop or playing outside in these conditions are more dangerous for them than an adult. Fingers and toes get cold, but the numbness that follows can go unnoticed until the negative effects progress. Frostbite is a reality, even more so when wind is part of the equation. Make sure that children aren't outside too long in these temperatures. Have them come inside for breaks to warm up. They can always go back outside and continue where they left off. If you can, allow them to wait inside for the bus, or wait with them in a vehicle. Watch for discoloration, mainly white or blue on the nose, cheeks, fingers, and toes. If these areas get too cold, be sure to warm them slowly and not immediately run them under warm water. Returning blood flow too quickly can have negative side effects.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Similarly to our blood flow is the plumbing in our home. Make sure that it doesn't drop too low in temperature either. Leave your thermostat above 55 if you leave and make sure that cabinets under the sink are left open so that the air can heat these pipes. This is especially important on exterior walls. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Make sure that all furnaces are in working order, and have a couple of space heaters on hand in case of an emergency.</span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><b><br /></b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><i><u><b>Keep in Contact</b></u></i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><i><u><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";"><br /></span></u></i></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">Keep in contact with your loved ones and make sure that they are ok. Make sure that the elderly that can't get out have food and heat. Call them on a regular basis to see if their needs change. Make sure that they have their medications and know how to take them if they are without assistance. If seniors need assistance, make sure that arrangements have been made for bad weather. If you yourself are elderly, reach out. Keep in touch and if for any reason you need help, call a loved one, or 911 if the situation requires it.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";"><u><i><b>Pets</b></i></u></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><i><u><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";"><br /></span></u></i></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">Last, but absolutely not least, are pets. Yes, they are animals and many other animals are out in the cold 24/7, but they are prepared for it. Don't leave pets out in the snow, ice, and subzero temperatures. Have a place for them to take shelter, keep warm, and have food and water. Domesticated animals cannot adjust to changing weather conditions the same as wild ones. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">Some of the aforementioned may seem obvious. The issues may or may not apply to you, however if there is just one individual that this helps, it is worth it. Pass it along. Help do your part in keeping all safe and sound.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">Oh, and sled safely too!!!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";"><br /></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">Christmas is coming, Thanksgiving seems like it was just yesterday, and then there's that New Years thing. This 6-8 week span wreaks havoc on those that attempt to eat healthy. How do you deal with it? How can you minimize the damage? What mindset should I take as far as what to eat and what not to? There are a few theories on this, but here is our take ...</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHN35pjl9xZJLt18Fu8jW6TdbL47x6tjmsJcyDCgvzf0NI-rs7vJS-_BVIqnvpKPQQtwzUz0J1SrkAbzMwux61SOIT-V4THmTqE9epahGK3W7VgYDDIBQqyrPUtTMvlX7U5ZyZ7o6LQ5jT/s1600/FullSizeRender+%255B202750%255D.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHN35pjl9xZJLt18Fu8jW6TdbL47x6tjmsJcyDCgvzf0NI-rs7vJS-_BVIqnvpKPQQtwzUz0J1SrkAbzMwux61SOIT-V4THmTqE9epahGK3W7VgYDDIBQqyrPUtTMvlX7U5ZyZ7o6LQ5jT/s320/FullSizeRender+%255B202750%255D.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There are a few types of people at this time of the year. The groups range from those who eat any and everything at any time all the way to the heath nuts. Either way, these rules apply to all of you. We will address New Years resolutions later, but for now here are a few of our "Holiday Rules"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1. <b><i>Turn Off for 2-3 Days - </i></b>Technology has us plugged in constantly. Quit for Christmas and enjoy the company that is in front of you ... No, not on vibrate .. Put it away!!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
2. <b><i>Throw Moderation OUT - </i></b>Pick 2-3 days over the holidays and do not worry what you eat. No matter how bad for you 3/365 days a year is not going to make a difference. If you want to balance things, fast for a couple of days over the summer. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
3. <b><i>Throw Away Leftovers - </i></b>In reference to #2 ... You can throw out the rulebook for a couple of days, but don't make it a habit. Those cookies in the jar and those chocolates are so tempting just sitting there staring at you. It makes 2-3 days of splurge turn into "maaaaybe just one more". People care, they gift you sweets. Enjoy them and let the remaining go. Don't turn "clean your plate" into cleaning out the cookie jar.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
4. <b><i>Cook for the Company - </i></b>Having a few people over for Christmas? No need for a 20lb turkey and ham and beef and noodles along with 8 sides and 4 salads. This leads to leftovers, heavy lunches and you end up wasting more than you think ... and gaining more as well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
5. <b><i>Drink Responsibly - </i></b>You've seen it before, but let this serve as a reminder. People are on the roads during this time. Your loved ones are on the road for the holidays. Protect them and everyone else by staying at home or getting a designated driver. Don't over consume and remember there are calories galore in your favorite beverages so imbibe conservatively.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These are just a few of the ideas that we wanted to bring to your attention. We hope that you have a Merry Christmas and that you spend quality time with your friends and family. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Remember<b><i> Prevention</i></b> is always better than<b><i> Repair!!!</i></b></div>

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Fall is a beautiful time in Middle Tennessee. Along with these beautiful sites, comes leaf raking. It is a great activity to get outside and possibly mingle with the neighbors. Biomechanically speaking however, it can be very dangerous for the spine. Flexion (bending at the waist) and rotation (turning) are the worst motions for the disks between the vertebrae. These are the two motions coupled when raking. The nice rain that we are experiencing recently a<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"></span><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"></span></span><span class="text_exposed_show"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">dds weight to the leaves and makes such a motion even more dangerous. Are we saying to upset your neighbors and let your leaves become their problem? Absolutely not!!! <li><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><u><b> Bend your knees when picking up the piles</b></u> - Use your leg strength to pick up the leaves rather than bending from the hips and putting extra forces on the spine.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><u><b> Take a walk afterward -</b></u> Limiting all bending and twisting is nearly impossible. Following your raking session, go for a short walk (1/2 mi) This pumps fluid with vital healing properties in and out of the disks, helping to offset the recent forces placed on the spine. </span></li>
<li><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><b><u> Finally</u></b>, if all of the above fail and you find yourself in pain, give us a call.
